Stanley spent his high school days living with his mother's mother – Blanche Crowell Westerfield. Along with running the Forada Beach Resort on Maple Lake, they had what today we would call a 'hobby farm' – for them it was sustenance.
Before school each day Stan milked their cows, bottled the milk, put the bottles in panniers on his bike, and delivered on his route in Forada. When he was done, he caught the bus in to the high school in Alexandria. When there was ice and snow, he made chains for his bike by taking a brass chain of the right size and wrapping it around the bike, between his spokes. The bumpiness didn't matter to him because the roads were gravel anyway.
