ASJ - Summer Work and Green Beans in Marshall IN

Summer Work and Green Beans in Marshall Indiana

Dad worked at a church in Marshall Indiana one summer. The church in Marshall was federated – Presbyterian, Quaker and Baptist. The joke was that if there was a flood, the Baptists would be in the basement (immersion), the Presbyterians on the first floor (sprinkling) and the Quakers upstairs (no baptism).church
The church always had Sunday School. They would announce if there would be a "preaching service" – if a pastor was available.   Though they were Presbyterians, they did get to experience one Quaker service. They would sit silently until someone had something to share or say. Then they waited again. After a while someone gave a benediction and they went home.

argStanley and Portia lived with Louis Bushong near Turkey Run State Park. (He later , at age 60, married Okal – but was a bachelor before that.)
Mom did Louis' laundry and cooking. He had to have green beans every day. If she didn't make green beans he would ask where they were and if they had enough. He had to put up 365 cans a year. Mom learned to run a mangle for ironing. It was over 100 degrees the first time she used it. In case you (like me) wonder what a mangle looks like, here's a lovely one from the Internet:603lot248
